What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)? |
| Obstructive Sleep Apnea is uncontrolled breathing pauses, or “Apneic events,” caused by the relaxed tissues in the airway during sleep. These events can happen 20 to 60 times an hour, disrupting a good nights sleep. Early recognition and treatment of OSA is important because it has been linked by studies to increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, elevated heartbeat, stroke, as well as, poor quality of life. | |
How common is OSA? |
| It has been estimated that one in five Americans suffer from OSA. Recent studies suggest that OSA may be as common as Type II Diabetes. The diagnosis is often missed because symptoms appear gradually, and are seemingly non-specific. Patients don’t often recognize the seriousness of the symptoms and therefore do not tell their doctors about them. | |
