A.A. Pain Clinic, Inc was the first pain clinic in Alaska, and among the first in the U.S., opening its doors in February 1994. We are the only full service pain clinic in Anchorage that specializes in cancer pain as well as headaches, neck, back, joint and musculoskeletal pain. Our clinic is also the only one that will visit and treat our patients in the hospital on a routine basis. The Clinic has continually provided superior care by a specially trained professional medical team that successfully diagnoses, treats and manages patients’ acute and chronic pain syndromes. The clinic has always been visionary in its approach to Pain Medicine, and continually stays abreast of all new pain regimes. Leon H. Chandler, M.D., the clinic’s President and Medical Director, was also the first Alaskan physician to specialize in Pain Management, doing so years before the Clinic was opened. Dr. Chandler was among the first physicians in the U.S. to implant spinal pain pumps in 1991, and later spinal cord stimulators. The Clinic was formed because he saw that there was a significant Alaskan population in serious need of Pain Management services. In the early 1990s Dr. Chandler was also instrumental in bringing The Cancer Pain Initiative to Alaska, changing the state statutes to encourage adequate pain treatment in our hospitals. The Clinic has always had a multi-disciplinary team approach to the diagnosis, treatment and management of pain syndromes. Currently we have, Anesthesiologists, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Doctors, Family Practice Doctors, and Nurse Practitioners specializing in Pain Management. When indicated patients are referred to the appropriate outside ancillary services for diagnostic tests, or referred to a specialist who most fits the patient’s particular need; this could be to a physical therapist, orthopedic or neurosurgeon, psychiatrist, psychologist, and/or chiropractor. In 2001, Dr. Chandler developed the Alaska Spine Clinic (ASC), which is adjacent to the Pain Clinic. The ASC was designed so that A.A. Pain Clinic patients could have immediate access to a surgery center that would provide the pain patient, as well as the physician, with a specialized medical team that could handle spinal procedures in the most expeditious and medically safe manner possible.

A.A. Pain Clinic’s mission is to have our patients be “at peace with pain”. We do this by preventing as much disability as possible through the proper and thorough diagnosis of a patient’s pain syndrome, and utilizing the appropriate treatment modalities and ancillary services. We believe in patient centered care. Our patients are encouraged to be a pro-active part of their pain management program, where they are recognized as individuals with their own unique needs. Our goal is to provide our patients with the highest quality of health care in a cost effective manner. It is our objective to give patients the tools they need to manage and control their pain, function independently, improve their quality of life, and significantly diminish any disabilities they may have by learning to adapt. |
